  1. Now it happened as Jesus was in his own house (the spring equinox) that both publicans and sinners sat with him at meat—the Passover. The Scribes and Pharisees wanted to know why he demeaned himself thus. Jesus told them he came to call, not the righteous (summer), but sinners (winter) to repentance—to their end. Summer didn’t end at the spring equinox, winter did. But, the disciples of John and the Pharisees, used to fast; why don't thy disciples fast? Yes, why? Because, when they fasted, it was winter, and they were without the bridegroom—the Sun. The latter is now with me and mine, i.e., it is summer, and we cannot fast. That is the reason. When the bridegroom is taken away, i.e., when winter comes, “then shall they fast in those days”—Mark 2: 20. You don’t patch old garments (winter) with new cloth (summer); nor put new wine (summer) into old bottles (winter). The poor people were astonished at his sayings.
