Most Brazilian Favelas are extremely safe. I have been in a few of them and if you are a gringo, you are extremely safe because they don't want an incedent. I shop in a favela because it has the best butcher and freshest vegetables. It is the only place where I don't have to worry about my care getting jacked or towed.
