Also, I think Jesus wanted to show the Gerasenes that these spirits tormenting the 2 men were evil and destructive. They were pagans, and pagans often revere spirits without recognizing what they are – that they are demons! They may have blamed the men or their families for their condition, as Jesus's disciples did the man born blind. Jesus wanted to show them the truth about those "spirits" and that the men were innocent. In asking Jesus to leave their territory they may have been having the same reaction Peter did when he first met Jesus and saw his miraculous power – "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" That Jesus did not consider them incorrigible is shown by his telling the former demoniac to go witness to them, which he would not have done if they were complete "swine".
