Actually, according to the FBI's files, it was his brothers wife who first connected the writing. He was sending his brother letters expressing how he was feeling, he also had papers written that he had published while employed as a professor. His sister in law read the Manifesto, and immediately thought it resembles the way Ted writes. His brother refused to believe her at first. After looking deeply into the manifesto, and comparing it to the past letters he received….He told his wife "Holy shit I think youre right. It is Ted, it has to be!" Then he called the FBI.

The irony of us disussing uncle Ted's ideas glued to our phones doing nothing makes me chuckle. I'm sorry, uncle Ted, the system won!
