The amount of technological advancements that come from wars is so much.
WW2 alone brought about so many advancements in damn near every field and context.
Historically 5 years of war was the equivalent to 50 in peacetime.
We are an insentive based species, and we need incentives to bother to innovate, we are not a naturally innovative species, without incentive we are very quick to rest on our morals. And war has always proven to be the biggest insentive.
If there where communists on Mars, the US would get there in the next 5 years, but because there is no enemy to beat up there, we might not see someone on Mars in my life time and I'm still in my twenties.
Personally I believe the life were looking for is a lot more closer to us now and we didn't have to go anywhere. The one reason I say it's not man is because nobody has taken over the planet. If one country had enough power that the rest of the planet was 1000 or more years behind well it goes without sayin. I mean what can you do? knowing there is something that is 1000 or more years advanced on our planet than any of us makes one wonder why they are here. Protect human race or protect the planet from the human race. Human race is true life world eaters. You can put us on a planet with sticks and stones and we'll turn it into a nuclear bomb.
