  1. I love Avi Loeb. He reminds me of Richard Feynman in his "open dialog" with nature approach. Feynman in one of his interviews was answering a question on grand unified theories and wouldn't it be great. He said something like, "That would be nice, but maybe that's not what nature is. Maybe its like an onion and you keep unraveling many complicated layers. Nature is going to be what she is." More to the academic close-mindedness, Feynman's first wife, Arline, would often put a question to him when he seemed preoccupied with the opinions of his colleagues about his work, "What do you care what other people think?".

  2. If you watch the whole interview, its pretty good. Although I rather disagree with Joe on the topic that we, as a human race, are so interesting to aliens. Just because our scientists go and study aints in the jungle. And I think there are a lot of points he does not consider when he talks about this topic.
Think about the size of the universe and the amount of possible civilisations out there. To assume that every civilization behaves and thinks exactly like the human race is not very likely.
And most importantly, if other races were like us, we should be fucking worried, cause if they find us we are fucked. We will get killed, raped and hold as pets just for fun. That's the human nature. What would happen if in the future, humans would find another planet with great resources and there is a native civilization? Human history is full of what would happen. So I am very sure that if Aliens were on earth, they would know our nature and would probably think hard what to do, if we are lucky and they are good natured. And it doesn't really matter if a lot or most humans are good natured, because the ones that decide are not very considerate and we still sit at home and accept their decisions.
