In theater most things are centered around fantasy, because the performances are live and the audience needs to imagine most things, rather than see them. It throws you off at the beginning if you are not used to watching theater plays, but you understand it once you've seen some of them. Clearly, Joe is a movie or TV guy just like most Americans. But generally in theater if you can 'act' a part, you usually don't have to 'look' it.
