  1. 22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”

    “Jacob,” he answered.

28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[a] because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.

30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[b] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

  2. You might not understand the passage friend.

Wether It was an Angel or God , does not matter , because the message that the man brought was from God.

Now when the man(Angel/God) could not prevail or overcome him(Jacob) It does not mean physically , because we both know an Angel being a supernatural being can undoubtedly overcome a human(Jacob).

What this means is that the Angel or God could not prevail in the sense of changing Jacobs(Israels) mind …meaning Jacob was stubborn… Jacob(Israel) prevailed over the Angel/God with his stubborness.
The Man(Angel/God) blessed Jacob and went on His way.

The blessing was a curse…. If you read the Torah or Tanakh ,
you would see God always referred to Israel as stiff necked stubborn people who always went against Gods WORD and NEVER according to Gods plans.

    The below passages will explain.

    Jacob represents Israel.

    Isa 30:1 “Ah, stubborn children,” declares the LORD, “who carry out a plan, but not mine, and who make an alliance, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin;

    Exodus 32:9-14 9
“I have seen these people(Israel),” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. 10 Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”

Deu 9:6 “Know, therefore, that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people.

Deu 9:13 “Furthermore, the LORD said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stubborn people.

Deu 31:27 For I know how rebellious and stubborn you are. Behold, even today while I am yet alive with you, you have been rebellious against the LORD. How much more after my death!

Isa 46:12 “Listen to me, you stubborn of heart, you who are far from righteousness:

Jer 5:23 But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart; they have turned aside and gone away.

Jer 16:12 and because you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, every one of you follows his stubborn, evil will, refusing to listen to me.
Eze 2:4 The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD.’

Eze 3:7 But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me: because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart.

Hos 4:16 Like a stubborn heifer, Israel is stubborn; can the LORD now feed them like a lamb in a broad pasture?

Zec 7:11 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear.
