There always needs to be a threat. It doesn't matter what it is. It was communism, then it was the Taliban, Al Qaeda, then ISIS, that threat disappears (or at least people stop caring) then it's Russia again, now it's China, 4G and Tik Tok. Without a threat they cannot convince you that you need to vote for them in order to remove the 'threat'. In a couple of years there will be the next big threat 'vote for me, only I can save you from this new threat!'
