I can tell you straight up, this guy is full of BS. The conversation never got to the ratios, there are two. Bottom line is that HDL is the good cholesterol and the higher the better. On the other hand LDL low density Lipo proteins is the bad cholesterol when it’s too high. HDL is responsible for cleanup up the LDL, getting it to the liver that processes it out of the body. Two major studies the Jupiter study and the Saturn study prove that higher LDL creates plaque in the a person’s arteries including coronary arteries. Once the plaque is substantial it can result in a needed angioplasty where stents have to be placed in or worse yet if it ruptures a heart attack can happen many that are fatal. Can there be side effects of taking statins? The answer is yes because every drug has its side effects. However the benefits of taking a statin far out way any adverse effects for persons who have high LDL and overall high cholesterol. The far majority of persons on statins have zero side effects. There is one potential rare side effect that if it happens they take you off the Statin immediately, it’s called rhabdomyolysis. So disregard what this guy is talking about because he has no idea. Heart disease has steadily declined around the world in a large part because of statins.
