He's definitely right in the sense that if your ideology wishes for more government control, that government will need an increasing amount of control over the population which is impossible to acquire with an armed population. In fact at some point size of government and having armed citizens become completely incompatible and you end up with something like europe where they're effectively taxed close to 60%
