Eating rats in Nepal ? Never heard of it. Im from Nepal, spent the last 40 years here. Nobody I know eats rats, except maybe some very localized tribes people in the plains of Terai.
I am from Nepal and I am from generational Buddhist family. Caste system is only applied in Hindu family and not all Nepali people are Hindus. There are many Buddhist families in Nepal as well who does not believe in Hindu verna caste system.
The people he was living with clearly gave him something to make him ill just so they could try and force him to accept their beliefs and get him to consider the shoemakers dirty. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths people will go to in order to try and force a pre-existing belief system on to others simply because they identify with it and consider it to be their own even though it was forced on them as well.
People do have love marriages as well.
