God's physical present in the Old Testament time is the Ark of Covenant. The Ark is nowhere to be found (as the body of the Blessed Mary, and these are facts as of today and since). "19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. The physical present of God today is in the Eucharist (if you are Catholic or Orthodox). This is a mystery as the Holy Trinity 3 Persons in 1 God. John 14 verse 8 (NKJV) – Philip said unto Him, Lord, show us the father, and it is sufficient for us. John 14 verse 9 (NKJV) – Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say,” Show us the Father”. And later Jesus promise to send the Holy Spirit. A temple or a church is for the faithful to gather and do public worship, but first God must be in each person's heart. John 14:20

20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. We cannot fully comprehend these mysteries, just like we can't with God, the Holy Trinity, space, time..ect. To be in communion with God, Angels and Saints with our hearts, mind and soul. We do not know the physical gathering/communion in heaven yet b/c we are not there yet, and our mind and emotion have to be elevated to a high level (beatific vision) to see and understand (God will raise the dead, that is why there is a physical body after this life, anew and refresh infinitely for the saved). Surely, God did not want a temple to be in, but the Jew wanted to limit God to a physical space and enclosure. King David did not understand that, but he went with God's will, not his sons.

God didn't allow king David to build the temple because He says that David is a man of war that shed lot of blood.

David ask "what is my house that You have brought me this far?" Approaching God with "what" instead of "why" changes everything. "What" is seeking, asking, knocking – "why" is demanding. David ask "What" and the Lord our God showered David with a beautiful promise.
