God punishes them but God would never hold grudges as you said. God was trying to tell David that He is beyond space and time, so human cannot limit God present in space or time. God created the existence not that God need the existence to live in. God created the universe without pre-existing material. Many religions believe the existence is everything and God must be in it, and the existence is before God come to be (Buddhism…ect). Do you see the role of the Creator and creatures/creations? This is an important Dogma of Christain faith (that God created everything that we call existence/universe).
