There's another rabbit hole on this topic that Joe didn't go down: people fabricating controversy on a painting, sculpture, literature (Shakespeare/Bacon), etc. because the provenance of a piece of art could as much as double its worth. So, the whole "It's not Da Vinci, and this dumb oil sheik is a moron." only puts more money in that oil sheik's pocket when he resells it or is son, grandson, or great-grandson resells it. Billionaires play games with this sort of stuff and it's a safer investment than stocks.
