Jesse James Leija, during his last couple years of fighting, would not include sparring in his training camp because he said it wouldn’t help him at all. It would only hurt him.
As long as we don't fall into classical China's error of primarily non-contact sparring punctuated by actual bouts and careening the martial endeavour towards eventual irrelevance, I'm okay with this realization.
Sparring is a necessity but you don't need to go hard at the head at all which is the work around for that supposed "reality"
