I have a former student who told me that he clearly saw a black panther cub in the wild down here in Mercedes, TX while he was fishing at "the Arroyo" stream that flows west to east across the southern Rio Grande Valley and as he approached it, it took off running into the tall grass and he never saw it again though he could hear it meowing like a wild cat as it got away, that it wasn't a regular cat either. This was in the late 2010s right before covid hit.
I saw one back in the early 1980s. I was at my mothers house on her 40 acres. It was standing at the back of my truck and its back was even with the top of my back bumper. Huge pie plate head and a long thick tail. It was larger than her malimute dog which ran inside growling with every hair standing straight out and hid under her kitchen table. I guessed the weight at 200 lbs.
