  1. Firstly, this was an amazing feat by O’Grady. However secondly it’s not entirely honest in terms of being unsupported and a unique first. The very good point that the national geographic article made was that for much of O’Grady’s route he followed a groomed marked route called the Spot route, set up to haul supplies to the South Pole. This was demonstrated by how fast O’Grady travelled once he got in this route.
It smooths out all the difficult to cross features such as ridges and crevasses plus removes much of the navigation issues, due to there being regular markers – a really important help!
Yes Ousland used a kite at certain points but it was only on limited situations, he was following a totally new route with ridges and crevasses to navigate- this was thus a far harder route and also double the length of the route followed by O’Grady. Thus even if Ousland used the kite for 600km, the distance he travelled without the kite pulling the sled was still far more than O’Grady, who decided on a rather limited definition of crossing Antarctica rather than “coast to coast”.

It’s totally disingenuous for O’Grady to not admit to all the advantages he had following a known groomed route for much of the trip compared to some much bigger difficulties faced by Ousland, when he faced huge areas littered with ridges and crevasses where he simply couldn’t use a kite and was hauling a sled up and down ridges. In fact most polar explorers consider using a groomed route as “supported”. An important point because it’s considered significantly more use that the use the kite had in Ousland’s trip.

Note also the national geographic article doesn’t say O’Grady doesn’t mention Ousland, rather talking about O’Grady’s claims not being accurate

  2. Right here Joe Rogan talks about something he has no clue about. Even with the kite 1/3 of the way, the 2/3 lengths he walked on skies is indeed a lot longer than O'Bradys expedition. And he did it more than 20 years earlier. Colin O'Brady should've written his book and talked about his feat in its own right, not try to hijack the "first solo" trip.
