  1. His motivation is objectively squandered. There's a good point to be made that you can overcome temporary pain/discomfort to accomplish wonderful experiences. Investing your time into a hiking trip or rowing a boat can just be your type of fun. Ordinary is the same as Normal. In reality, there will never be the now in all of its complexities, again, ever. Every person has a story to tell. An amusing moment. A separation between them and society. A common goal they share with their species. Such a one through ten number system is as an immature fratboy diminishing the human value in front of him. Take a cold shower. Be grateful you have the ready flow of water that civilization was in possession and then forgot in self-destruction. To count on comfort is self-serving but so is saying your life is at an apogee after a snow walk.

  2. I do get what he says. We once went hiking with my dad and sister to this hiking path in northern Finland (Käsivarsi Wilderness). It took us five days to walk ~100km (~62 miles). Our backpacks were unnecessarily heavy, our tents weren't even waterproofed so our sleeping bags got wet the first night when it rained and we barely slept. My hiking shoes were too hot to a summer day, but my sneakers didn't support my ankles enough. After 40-50km every step I took was painful to my feet, knees and hips. I can't even describe how fucking happy we were to see our car at the parking lot after those painful 5 days, and I can tell you I have never been so happy to see a couch when we got to our cabin. Still, those 5 days were one of the best weeks in my life, and even though it was painful, I will probably do it again.
