Correction for Joe -a minority are watching because of the amazing athletes. If they were, the major athletic competitions that happen between olympics would get ratings. People watch the olympics because NATIONALISM. Televise track & field, nobody watches. Slap a USA and China sticker on the competitors and it's a ratings BONANZA. The Olympics are all about nationalism.
But I agree with Joe that the athletes should get paid prize money proportional to their success.
