It's true that most people don't comprehend 'why the rockets explode', nor why they are PURPOSELY expected to fail.
Better that they fail (a lot!) during testing with ZERO LIFE ABOARD rather than during the real deals.
Obviously, NASA still hadn't perfected everything (budget, probably), and in the case of 'Challenger'… a simple rubber O-ring got 'em.
On a small scale, I've been there. No joke. I made devices which relied upon certain tiny rubber insulation gaskets which prevented electrical circuits from (sometimes) shorting out–under specific conditions. Wear, weather, years and tear broke some… and rendered the devices useless in the moment.
A freakin' TWENTY CENT PART disabled a $300-$600 device. I'm not kidding.
EVERYTHING needs to work properly. Even the 'menial' parts. Think of it like a bicycle with even ONE kink in the chain: it's over. lol ๐๐๐คฎ
