Every time Joe describes how comedy works I start to piss blood again.
as great of an entertainer as I find Bert to be, I'd put him in the category of what Malcolm Gladwell was referring to. Bert has years and years of a brute force method, surrounding himself with technically sound comics (Segura, Burr, even Rogan) to help him really structure his work and has come up on rooms full of people putting back drinks and wanting to see the guy from the travel channel or whos a huge part of youtube/instagram now.
People like Segura, Burr, Rogan, Hart, back to Pryor or Hicks …these are astute, and technically sound writers that can make a room laugh at true substance whether they're under the influence or know who they are in the first place or not. so while as a whole, I disagree with Gladwell's perspective on standup comedy being "easy", he's not entirely wrong that there are comics that rely heavily on a room full of people under the influence wanting to see the guy behind the mic, not what comes from the mic like you would the half dozen other comics I mentioned above.
