I've been doing stand-up for 4 years (before lockdown!) HUGE fan of Gladwell, read all the books except the new one (Talking to Strangers) even been retweeted by him in 2013 reviewing the book tour reading (David & Goliath) here's my take… yeah everyone can be funny in front of friends on a night out, or 'their crowd' – everyone can do a 6 week workshop course followed by a 5 minute showcase set, but when you're 6 gigs in on the open-mic circuit, 15 comics either not watching or watching and not laughing, 2 real audience, 1 dog, that's when you die on your arse and then giving up your evenings to do stand-up doesn't seem such a good idea, that's when 5 minutes on stage to near silence can feel like the longest 5 minutes of your life. I run and MC open-mics, i put a friend on to do a 5 minute set (twice) after he'd seen and supported me early on in my journey, he didn't do the workshops, he didn't ask me for advice and i didn't look over his material beforehand, it was cringe central, and didn't work on the audiences I had in those nights. Before that I used to say to people in conversation "everyone can do 5 minutes" I don't tell people that anymore 🙂 Looking forward to getting back on stage soon, zoom gigs are not the same, but follow my channel for topical material!
4:45 he's talking about Bryan Callen
Why didn't Jamie look up the clip of gladwell's comment he was slipping or sick this day
Finally found the clip of Gladwell talking about comedy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzCISfZYd7s
yeah, bro. Tell me that after you do an open mic in a sports bar.
Only grug heads like joe rogan think gladwell has anything interesting to say at all
