  1. I disagree. I think that the change in perception will require multiple studies coming out to confirm the experiments done, and the change in perception of viewing aging as an incontrovertible fact of life to one that will be changed in the near term will occur over the course of a few years. What I'm saying is specific to America.

What De Grey and other futurists fail to account for is the well-known fact that it takes a ridiculously stupidly long amount of time for information to reach the general public. By "the general public" I don't mean people who read their social media feeds; I mean the average person that's working at McDonalds and living paycheck to paycheck. Those people have zero interest in politics, have no interest in social issues or public policy, and simply live life day to day because they have no real time for leisure. Millions of blue-collar jobs where people are working 10-12 hour days for 6 days a week do not spend time listening to what Oprah has to say. They bring home a paycheck, crack open a beer or a bottle of spirits and watch the History Channel. Politicians have wisely realized that a huge percentage of America is this stereotype, which is why very broadly supported positions in this country can be directly opposed by politicians and yet it doesn't affect their chances of reelection when November comes around.

In short, people on social media dramatically overestimate their representation in the country. The vast majority of the country won't know about this, won't think it's real, won't think it's a big deal, won't think it's coming soon, etc. They're apolitical, jaded, and disinterested. Convincing those people that something as seemingly fantastical as living extremely longer than ever before will take a lot of work.

  2. Imagine being someone born in our time, with 99% of humanity having already lived, and dying 5 years before aging is overcome. Those are the people I feel the worst for—the people who are likely alive right now, who won’t get to see the fruits of our progress on this front. I pray that I am not one of those unlucky people, that Mr. de Gray is right, and that I’ll get to see what the future has in store for myself and humanity. Sometimes I come back to this video to re-remind myself why I do what I do to remain healthy, aside from the shorter-term benefits.

I believe we are close to overcoming it and, man, do I ever wish for that to happen. I enjoy my time on this earth, but always in the back of my mind have that desire for more time. Much more. And I do not at all think that is a selfish desire. Because there is so much to experience in this world. And we are probably the only generation in history to have a fighting chance at truly beating back the inevitable.

  3. @6:20 lots of money on a proper war on aging? How about lots of money on mRNA? Snap. Feb2020? How about a war on a coronavirus? Sure whatever works. Elderly elites smelling immortality and prepared to break many eggs to make their forever-omelette.
