My understanding is that it's not really that our futures are pre-determined but that God just knows how you will use your free will because He exist throughout all of space and time all the time. All men are created to serve God, and to those willing to listen He will guide in a more personalized direction.
You read too much into the term "determined purpose for us" given by God.
What this really means is that if you truly believe in God you can follow a just path and be in his good graces. You don't have to be a President, rich or even a minsiter to do this either. God wants to be in good terms with everyone that believes in him and even those that dont.
This is similar to how almost all parents want or even expect their children to grow up. They want their children to be fruitful members of society.
It is ultimately up to the children themselves to choose their own destiny.

In 1977 I chose God and I asked him to be the master of my life and that is free will and I may fall off the path but he will put me back on but that is what I chose and that is what I want and I chose to leave the path of course I could but why would I as it has been a wonderful journey
