A certain Sufi belief helps me understand what the critics point out as a discrepancy in the Bible.
They ask why is it that when John was asked if he were Elijah he replied he is not. Yet when people asked Jesus what about Elijah, he was foretold to come, Jesus replied He came but you did not know him. The Bible says that at once people understood Jesus meant John.
The Sufis says each soul has its purpose. The stronger the Soul gets connected to the flesh ( the flesh becomes Spirit) the higher the responsibility given to it. Each soul manifests according to its " type". Jesus for instance was too gentle to be a John. And Jesus was Jesus.
So it is very possible that John himself was not revealed the reality of his being. In simple words, his past lives.
Jesus on the other hand would have the spiritual capacity to " see through John". Knew his Soul in an All Seeing Way.
