Edwig wasn't that bad. He was just a kid and he did pretty much the same things all other rulers did, but as a youngster he didn't know how to be discreet. He also had too many religious zealot adults on his trail who wouldn't let him do anything he wanted. The whole thing with his marriage to Ælfgifu sounds like Catholic Church spite. And his death is highly suspicious … sounds like a well-planned and executed intruige plot by the clergy and nobility.
What ever happened to our awesome names like Æthelstan, Edwig, Ælswith, etc? Now we all have stupid Anglicized Bible names (myself included) … 🤦♂️
I swear I'm gonna name my sons Beowulf and Æthelred 😂
I feel like there was more to the Dunstan rivalry than merely the cockblocking element. Perhaps a priest he disliked as a youth that resembled Dunstan and if "the fair" related to his looks, he may have been unsettled at how female behaviour changed towards him when he was crowned.
