The story as a whole is metaphorical prelude of what is to come regarding Jesus Christ. The people turned from God. The golden calf represents the royal splendor that was sought for in a messiah, but not seen in the true Messiah born in a barn. Jesus Christ represents the law. When they turned from God to the golden calf, the law was broken, just as when Jesus Christ was rejected, he was crucified. Because of these, destruction followed.
Numbers 19 The Lord told Moses and Aaron, 2 “This is the ordinance of the law that the Lord commanded that the Israelis be told: They are to bring you a spotless red heifer, without physical defect, that has never been fitted with a yoke.
Also metaphorically, Jesus Christ is the spotless red heifer who was never slave to sin, who is the sacrificial atonement for sin.
The cold hard truth is: The Trinity is the Golden Calf of Christianity.
