I cannot believe this account, which is very muddled. The account in Matthew is set during Herod’s reign. He died around 4 BCE. The account in Luke is set around 6 AD, tens years after Herod’s death. The census, initiated by the Roman governor in Syria, was conducted in place. No one was required to travel. These are fanciful stories made up long after Jesus’ death. There is absolutely no record of ‘The Massacre of the Innocents’, which is another made up story. There was no one to record the birth of an unknown child of an unknown, poor family. There are absolutely no eyewitness accounts in the Bible of these events. They have been retrospectively added after Mark, who made no mention of these events.
