  1. Why is hemp not used over fiberglass on body panels?
Hemp still requires non “eco” plastic binders. You’re negating the supposed eco benefits over fiber glass. “Why not use more eco friendly resin?” Why not use those same eco friendly resin in the production of fiberglass?

Hemp is strong but it’s a fiber. It’s unidirectional in stresses it can withstand. “Why not create it in a weave?” Well that raises cost and complexity and at that point you might as well use aramid or carbon fiber. “Doesn’t aramid suffer from UV degradation?” So you think a natural, biodegradable substance isn’t gonna have its own inherent problems when the resin is compromised in one way or the other?

“What about a composite fiber board like material?” Hemp’s tensile strength is around 50 MPa with and elastic modulus of 3.5 GPa….. That’s exactly the same strength and stiffness as unreinforced polyester resin.

The hemp fibers do nothing to reinforce the composites and just add cost and complexity.

If you’re wondering, fiberglass and carbon fibers have a tensile strength of 30 to 50 times higher respectively . Carbon fiber composites clock in at 50 and 150 times in stiffness, fiberglass at 20 times stiffer by comparison to The hemp composites.
