The wolves are trying to find how many sheep can be taken w/o any difficulty and how many will run and hide or fight and bite so they can gauge how successful the plan might come out to it's design or not and how much of a fight they may actually have to fight for themselves as sheep never have and never will make good warriors as they don't think for themselves and only follow directions so take away the direction and they become like chickens w/their heads cut off before they finally run out of what keeps them going and then they sit down or fall over .
