I like the fact that in all of his content concerning China, Joe doesn't once interview someone who's actually Chinese or has real expertise and immersive experience in the country. Like, for example, in terms of religion, Chinese atheism isn't completely a result of the communist purges, because it also has to do with China having an ancient tradition of secularism, embodied in Confucianism, which is kind of like a religion but isn't. It was common, during the imperial era, for Chinese people to believe in multiple different religions simultaneously, which reflects the fact that Chinese culture just has a different approach to faith than the West. Interviewing a Sinologist (an academic which training and expertise in Chinese culture) or a Chinese person would help clarify these stuff. Instead, Joe just talks to random white dudes who have a stiff and rigid "you're either religious (hopefully Christian) or you're probably amoral" logic.
