I've worked in a kitchen for around 11 years total and done some of everything – cooking, food prepping, dishwashing, expo, etc. I like that there are others in these comments who "get it" and understand how tough it can be. I've seen and heard all sorts of ridiculous stuff, stuff that should not even be real. Stuff like cooks openly laughing at and making fun of a female server who came in with a black eye one morning, or stuff like openly gang affiliated white dudes, black dudes, and mexican dudes all in the kitchen at the same time. Also, the drug/alcohol use is absolutely as rampant as others have said that it is. I've been straight edge for almost 18 years, though, so not one sip of alcohol, not one puff of a cigarette, etc. Other people's reality does not determine mine. Fuck drugs.
I'm so happy I left food service behind, and I will never work in another restaurant again as long as I live. Absolutely the most brutal, thankless, unhealthy, toxic, underpaid work ever conceived outside the fucking gulag. And I had a position most would envy as prep cook in an A list 5star restaurant in Hollywood CA with an immaculate kitchen. It's a fucking life killer, and no joke.
JOE ROGAN!!! keep going my man and move forward two steps dont let them push you back… "FUCK THE NOISE"

I quit working in a kitchen and started making professional grade knives and tools for other cooks.
Now i just make knives and make good money. People love the tools i make and that feels good.
