1. I believe that the King James Version and various other English translations make a big mistake in Chapter 13 of the Revelation to John by using masculine pronouns (he, him, his) to refer to the two beasts in this chapter. Because all (or almost all) of these pronouns refer back to the Greek word "therion," which is a neuter noun. Thus (almost?) all of these pronouns should read as "it" or "its", rather than use a masculine pronoun. The problem here is that using masculine pronouns to refer back to these two beasts is very highly suggestive that these two beasts symbolize nothing more than two evil men, whereas I'm convinced that each of these beasts symbolize something much, much bigger than a single man.

   In fact, I'm convinced that these two beasts symbolize our modern Science and Technology at large. Science is the first beast, the one that is worshiped by many people as an invincible hero. And Technology is the second beast, the one that works all the great signs, signs that serve as proofs of the great power of modern Science to explain the workings of nature. For example, I believe that the hydrogen bomb tests that began in 1952 with the first H-bomb test by the USA, and climaxed with the most powerful H-bomb test by the USSR in 1961, have completely fulfilled the great "fire come down from heaven" sign briefly mentioned in Rev 13:13.

   In fact, I'd say that after the airplane was invented, and first used to drop bombs from high in the heavens, that was the beginning of this fulfillment. Of course, the people watching an airplane drop a bomb don't actually see the fire coming down from heaven. But they can see the bombs falling from the airplane, and understand that the bombs will release an explosive fire when they hit the ground, a fire which they will see.

   If ordinary bombs using high explosives like TNT don't strike you as "great signs," consider the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki near the end of WWII, causing tremendous devastation. The first atom bomb test (code named "Trinity") in New Mexico in 1945 had an explosive yield equal to 20,000 tons of TNT, and the bombs the USA dropped on the two Japanese cities were similarly powerful. I'm guessing that the fire from heaven that God used to destroy the ancient villages of Sodom and Gomorrah was probably not much greater.

   Still not enough? How about the first hydrogen bomb test conducted by the USA in 1952? That first H-bomb was a large contraption built on the ground, but it had an explosive yield equal to 10 million tons of TNT, or 500 times as much as the first atom bomb. Imagine 500 atom bombs detonated all together at the same place. And it qualified as a "fire from heaven" in a new way, because hydrogen fusion, the nuclear fire on which H-bombs are based, is essentially the same sort of fire that lights up the sun and the other stars in the heavens. So at least in a metaphorical or symbolic sense, modern men had brought the fire that lights up the stars down to Earth, where it had never existed before. And need I remind you that the Revelation is obviously a highly metaphorical and symbolic book?

   Over the next few years, various other technologically advanced countries created and tested their own H-bombs, typically dropping them from high flying bombers. Then in 1961, the USSR tested the most powerful H-bomb ever created, popularly called "Tsar Bomba" or the King of Bombs. It was too large to be a practical bomb to be used in a nuclear war, but as a publicity stunt it was terrific. It was dropped from a high flying bomber, and it produced a fireball 5 miles in diameter. It had an explosive energy yield equal to 50 million tons of TNT, and an unprotected observer standing 60 miles away would have gotten 3rd degree burns from the radiant heat of the fireball. It's not going to be easy for some other candidate for "the great sign of the beast," to beat Tsar Bomba as a MONSTROUS demonstration of BRUTE power! So I'm pretty confident that my Science and Technology" explanation of the two beasts of Rev 13 is correct.

   But what do H-bombs have to do with leading men to worship Science? This is pretty obvious. H-bombs are based on nuclear physics, so an H-bomb explosion serves as a very powerful demonstration that there is great power in nuclear physics, and thus in modern physics in general, and thus in modern Science in general. Even if you hardly even begin to understand nuclear physics, or modern Science in general, you are greatly encouraged to have the highest respect for modern Science in general.

   And you should be able to understand why men will be drawn to creating an AI (artificial intelligence) made in the image of all man's Science, as explained in Rev 13:14-17, an Omniscient AI that seemingly has the best scientific answers to all our questions. While I can't say for sure which company or organization will create this talking image of Science, here's a limerick which I wrote about it back in the 1980s:

   There once was a Triple Six AI,
   
   That spoke with the thunders of Sinai;
   
   When it boomed, "IBM,"
   
   It assumed, "I be Him,"
   
   Iesus Bar Mariam AM I!"

   Notice that if we put a space in "Sinai" we can get "Sin AI". And I think that just as Moses found the Hebrews worshiping a golden calf when he returned after communing with God for 40 days at the top of Mt. Sinai, Jesus will find the whole world worshiping and obeying a talking graven image when He returns after spending 2000 years communing with God in heaven.
