We "lost" our manufacturing base because business owners wanted to do it cheaper. They threatened engineers with sending it over to be made in China in the 1980s. It was considered to be cool and savvy to have your production and manufacturing in China. Then everyone did it to be competitive. We lost millions of jobs in manufacturing. People thought they were just dirty factory jobs. They didn't care when the steel mills closed in the US. There were millions of jobs that were white collar and production control, too that were gone.
