In South Korea and Japan, people wore masks if they had cold, flu, or any disease transmittable through the air. It’s due the heavy density of the population. If you had been to the two countries and experienced public transportation during commuting hours, you’d know what I mean.
They are already accustomed to wearing it. They just needed the better masks.
People in the US, or any where else for that matter, are not familiar with masks, which have negative impression associated with it. Usually you would see them in movies in which criminals wear them. So they had to overcome the mental obstacles when it comes to wearing masks daily. Once they passed that bump, civilized and considerate people started wearing them.
We are all the same. If South Korean people were first introduced to wearing masks due to covid, they’d have had the same problem.
