Take a little word from the tired old Christian way. Legalism almost always is a veneer that hides the worst evil. Someone once told me that it just always seemed that the more moralistic and legalistic a person was the more rotten, they often turned out to be inside. Gross overcompensation of their own guilt and sin. Railing everyone over minutia no theology really ever cared about and then you find out they're a pedophile. Many of the people who are on this virtue signaling kick might not fall into this category. They may just be young and full of fire and wanting a cause to give their life meaning but if you've become legalistic, you're likely keeping company with people like that. Who knows do it long enough and you may become people like that too.
All I can say in regards to the "festival of trans-phobic hatred" claim is that I only heard considered and intelligent criticism. No doubt someone out there was going over the top and distorting the picture – that is the natural outcome of platforms what multitudes can express an opinion – but I didn't come across any of it. And this makes it impossible to argue sensibly about the matter. I would bet my bottom dollar that someone out there hit the nail on the head. After all, trans-phobia is not an absolute.
