  1. Dan Crenshaw is simply incorrect in several areas; it's one thing to have an opinion, it's another to make stuff up. The WHO issued a technical guidance on January 10th stating the potential for human-to-human contact; it was not , as Mr Crenshaw states, "repeating China's claim… in mid January". Shutting down travel has never worked for former pandemics that have a long incubation time; that's why they didn't recommend it. You'll have a closed border, an earlier dent into the economy, and it will spread anyway; you've created a false sense of security, which is what using the virus as a political tool against China is doing as well. There is no evidence that WHO is "controlled by China" and the WHO is probably no more corrupt than the Trump administration and our government is.
You don't need to have most manufacturing located in the U.S. to stockpile equipment to protect against virus transmissions; you simply need to prepare and stockpile.
US manufacturing had a golden era, but it was due to every other major economy being in ashes after WWII, not simply American ingenuity; American companies simply weren't building better stuff in the 60's 70's (think Harleys and autos…), and once other countries stabilized and re-built their economies, they began competing quite well – especially Japan. They built smarter. It's not quite the simple choice that Mr Crenshaw paints, i.e. STEM fields over gender studies; for folks building infrastructure, you need STEM majors. Folks designing public policy or making laws are far better off with liberal arts majors; history degrees can help you understand why Crenshaw's analysis is a bit flawed. He has a liberal arts degree for fuck's sake – and there's plenty of research that shows that, in long run, on average, liberal arts majors earn MORE than STEM fields, so he's incorrect in stating that there are degrees that are "guaranteed not pay anything". An English degree won't earn as much out the gate, but you can work your way up a corporate ladder better; there are plenty of engineers who can't write for shit, and don't understand the diversity in the economy, which is what marketing requires. He's simply full of shit on this. The issue for conservatives like Crenshaw is that liberal arts degrees produce folks who can learn how to sift through bullshit like this.
