  1. Ive wondered about different lifestyle scenarios since I was a kid and if or how much happier I'd be if I lived a more challenging life. I loved the storyline in books like "hatchet" or "my side of the mountain". The main characters are totally alone which I'd hate, but the the hunter gathering/living in a fort or cabin/daily struggle aspect always seemed appealing to me.
Really, the ease of modern society has only been around for a few hundred yrs and its actually been a very unnatural drastic change. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the benifits of industrialization n medicine but it does take away a sense of purpose for a lot of people, especially for guy's. The movie "fight club" portrays what I mean perfectly.

  2. The problem with Dan's view on personal responsibility is that it erases the inequality of the system. Personal responsibility is great and all, but when you look at our politics and economy the rules of the game are most definitely in the favor the rich/wealthy/investment class. If you only focus on personal responsibility you are essentially telling people to ignore that the rules of the game are against you and just keep working harder.

Use sprinting as an example. Training is definitely important, but if other people are starting at the 10m mark ahead of you and keep getting told to "train harder", then you're being cheated.
