This should absolutely go ahead. Even if someone tests positive, a) these are athletes at peak physical fitness. They are the least likely of all people in society to have a negative reaction to a virus. b) they put it all on the line, every time. They get the crap beat out of them and train like a demon consistently. The damage to their careers from postponing competition for this reason do not add up; the risk does not outweigh the necessity to keep performing. c) this is (on paper at least) a free society, if someone wants to compete even with a person who has the virus, they should be allowed to do so. Everything else is irrelevant they make the choice based on their rights as an individual and personal liberty. d) the ufc is going about this in the right way, decentralising the event to a remote location to ensure the maximum safety for others, testing the athletes and those directly involved in the event itself, what more can they do? As an organisation they can’t afford to just shut down indefinitely. And as I said the athletes can’t either. Missing a fight or taking 6 months, a year out can be a career killer. That’s why doping bans are often in the region of 6 months- 1 to 2 years, that’s enough to ensure punishment whilst maintaining a deterrent. They have families and bills they need to pay like everyone else. e) if we don’t have an effective treatment for this at the moment which we don’t, what’s the logic in a prolonged situation of quarantine for everyone no matter their personal situation or opinion on the matter, we are basically at the mercy of this virus at the moment we are told so denying people the right to maintain employment and use it as an excuse to take rights away is not only nonsensical but dangerous.
I really hope this goes ahead. Not only is this what many, many people under lockdown right now want to see, so enjoyment for them and business for the ufc in tough times, I think it’s an ideal distraction for the difficulty people are going through as sports have been for thousands of years. And the card is ridiculously good. Please make this happen oh Lordy
