  1. The big issue I have with targeted ads and privacy and the like with these various tech companies and cell phone companies is the lack of true choice. The only real choice a consumer has if they don’t want the invasion into their privacy by these entities is to choose not to use any of the products. And that really isn’t a realistic choice in the marketplace. I’m a sense it’s what would be called an adhesion contract where you have no real choice in terms of agreeing to the terms since the terms come with using the product period.

  2. What’s also additionally wild with targeted ads is that they’re not actually regulated by anybody. I had to research the legal requirements surrounding targeted ads for my workplace because since we occasionally advertise on Facebook, who use targeted ads, we wanted to be legally safe by disclosing a targeted advertisements policy for consumers.

In my research I found that targeted advertising isn’t regulated by any government entity. Essentially the FCC and FTC overlook targeted advertising as an industry in a sense but don’t actually regulate it or have any framework regarding a legal framework for what companies can and cannot do with this advertising. Essentially the companies have continued to find a way to convince the government to continue allowing them to “self regulate” themselves as it pertains to this. And if you watch this guy you can see how open for abuse this type of advertising can be.

An additional issue in terms of privacy is that basically every one of these platforms that you use require you to aheee to their terms, which consents to allowing them to invade your privacy as they wish. And so your choice is to either not use these platforms at all or agree to allow them to collect a plethora of information. And it’ll continue to get worse and worse marketwide unless at some point the government finally elects to reign it in.
