I went to Costa Rica in 2017 and one of the first things I noticed was that on trash day each of the houses only had like 1 small plastic grocery bag full of trash for the whole week. They obviously didn't have all their food come in plastic containers like we do. They didn't even have plastic trash cans to collect the trash in and put on the street.
