The deal with hockey fights is that they are first and foremost tactical in nature. Fights are often done to mess with people, keep the other team off star players, get someone off the field, send a message, etc. Hockey might be one of the few sports that has a designated "fall guy" position where one member who is tougher than most, but lacks the same on the field skill as others, is chosen to be the guy to initiate fights and take penalties, aka the Goon
