The Rapture of Moses
5 And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. 6 He buried him[a] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. 7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. 8 The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over. [Deuteronomy 34:5-8 NIV]
8 In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings. 9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”[a] 10 Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct—as irrational animals do—will destroy them. A dead body is worthless. Then why is Moses’ body having such great worth that two Angels were arguing over it? He was not “dead” in the usual sense of the word. Was he in some form of suspended animation, pending his latter-day reappearance? A brief passage from the history of Flavius Josephus reveals what the Jews actually thought about Moses’ “death:”
“Now as soon as they were come to the mountain called Abarim [Nebo], (which is a very high mountain, situate over against Jericho, and one that affords, to such as are upon it, a prospect of the greatest part of the excellent land of Canaan,) he dismissed the senate; and as he was going to embrace Eleazar and Joshua, and was still discoursing with them, a cloud stood over him on the sudden, and he disappeared in a certain valley, although he wrote in the holy books that he died, which was done out of fear, lest they should venture to say that, because of his extraordinary virtue, he went to God” [Antiquities, IV. viii. 48].
Flavius Josephus could be right else how does Moses write about his own death. I mean Deuteronomy was written by Moses. Here, Josephus wrote that there was an apparent eyewitness account showing Moses being lifted up into a cloud, the very same idea expressed by Paul in the New Testament, as he describes the rapture of the church! I think his body rose to heaven, where it lay in a place designated by the Lord where Satan attempted to take it? Certainty Moses’ death was out of the ordinary. He didn’t die and little wonder “yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone” and later, in the days of Jesus, Moses appeared to Jesus with Elijah, who had also been taken to heaven alive. Peter, James and John witnessed Transfiguration on Mountain:
1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. [Matthew 17:1-3 NIV]
Whether or not it is true that he was taken in a cloud, as mentioned by Josephus, is irrelevant. He didn’t die in the ordinary sense. He was caught up.
