The comatose state is no longer a mystery in this day and age but 2000 years ago the intellect of humanity did not recognise it. To the people of that day comatose people were deceased and would soon become so once buried or entombed. Such knowledge does not diminish the "miraculous" ability of Jesus in returning Lazarus to healthy life. Jesus even said Himself that Lazarus was not dead. How did He know this? In constant communication with His angelic companions He would have been told that Lazarus was still living – the silver cord or energy cord binding the spiritual body to the physical body having not been broken. The breaking of the cord is the act of finality in a human's life on earth and is usually attended to by an angel at the appropriate moment – unless one's end is brought about by extreme violence.
In the not too distant future medical professionals will determine the moment of physical death by the state of the energy cord which was first attached to the tiny foetus shortly after conception. Whenever the soul temporarily leaves the physical body during sleep, anaesthesia, trauma, or OBEs it remains attached to the physical body and is capable of stretching over infinite distances.
