  1. Distilling your own alcohol at home is perfectly legal here in New Zealand. My dad's friend made a Sarsaparilla gin that was really incredibly good and came out with a mid 40s ABV. In most countries, making home liquor is a crime, in New Zealand, it is a popular hobby.

    There's definitely an element of danger. It's possible to have the alcohol content be primarily methanol which will be poisonous. A little bit of methanol is fine as long as there is more ethanol because ethanol is the antidote to methanol. I think vast swathes of people died from methanol poisoning during prohibition and that left a big stigma on the practice in the Northern Hemisphere countries that keeps those moonshining laws in place even a century later. The methanol was probably added after making the moonshine to make it stronger. They also used lead pipes in their stills. With modern equipment and a decent understanding of the chemistry, it's pretty safe.
