I have had several conversations with Brett since the incident and find him to be an amazing man let alone being a dedicated and professional officer.
Something most people overlook is the fact that while covid is a virus and cant possibly infect the vessel itself, it was sweeping through the crew. With the ships main weapon being it's Aircraft and the aircrews also being part of the ships company, there was very significant risk to the ship itself.
Most infected persons are asymptomatic to begin with. What would happen if a pair of F18s were on a long range sorte and on approach to land back aboard ship one of the pilots was now afflicted with a hacking cough? Imagine the damage and loss of life if an F18 slammed into the deck during a trap and the ship caught fire? Remembering the Forrestal incident, USS Roosevelt would have been put out of action for years not to mention the loss of life amongst the crew. Captain Crozier did the right thing by the Navy and his crew and he paid the price with his career.
He should have been awarded a medal for putting his ship and his crew ahead of his career.
