In a pamphlet called Common Sense, published in the lead up to the American Revolution, Thomas Paine wrote, Men who look upon themselves born to reign and others to obey soon grow insolent. Selected from the rest of mankind, their minds are early poisoned by importance. And the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests. And when they succeed in the government, they are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions. Isn’t it funny how history seems to repeat itself over and over and over? We’re constantly being told we’re progressing as a people, and yet we keep finding ourselves locked in the repetition of certain cycles, as if we are doomed to repeat moments in time where imbalances were not properly worked out. Anyone who has studied history in depth knows all too well that it is a long and painful process. The British monarchy and its coronation rituals have an interesting history, rituals which have been recently described as the last religious monarchical coronation rites in the West. But what they’re not saying is that the British coronation ceremony is one of the most powerful symbols modern humanity has of the union between church and state. In America, this unholy union was permanently separated in the enshrinement of the first amendment to the United States Constitution.
