  1. Gabriel is called and angel in canonical scripture but understood in Jewish, and Muslim to be the archangel.

Michael is never properly called an angel but always ¨the archangel¨.

Archangel (Chief or leader of angels) is a direct leader of angels in the hierarchy of heaven. Two positions directly lead all angels. One is the position that Gabriel holds–an angel who commands all the rest. This position was originally held by Lucifer, the Son of the Morning, leader of the Heavenly choir, before his rebellion to become the devil.

The other Position directly between God and the angels it that of "the Son of Man, also called Jesus, Lamb of God and a multitude of names attached to his different purposes and responsibilities. As Ruler of all Angels he is called "Michael, the archangel" This is also why Jude 1:9 uses Michael the archangel to show true holy submission—Michael submits himself to God the Father to extend the theme of Philippians 2:5-9, John 6:38 and 1 Corinthians 15:28.

Both of them lead the Angels. Gabriel is an angel first and was promoted to Archangel. Michael must always lead the Angels, and all of heaven, as the son of God. He has greater power than the other angels and will provide power as needed.
