In the striping of the goats through dappled branches, that does seem like trickery. There's a BIG reach for character growth from the narrator in my opinion here in stating it was all above board, but I do think theres a compromise where his trickery was a gift from god, or that as the narrator suggests, was facilitated by god. Either way in crediting god afterwards, I believe shows growth there.
